With victories over BuzzFeed and Forbes today in the 17th NYMSL Playoffs, held at Morningside Park, Chartbeat became the second team in league history to win three titles in a row, or three-peat.
From 2009-2012, Wall Street Journal earned the championship four consecutive years for a four-peat.
On a cloudy day in Manhattan with rain in the forecast, Chartbeat and BuzzFeed took early leads in the semifinals and never looked back. Forbes kept the game with Chartbeat close in the early innings, tieing it in the third at 3-3. Chartbeat matched Forbes with three in the third and gradually pulled away with three more in the sixth for a 12-6 final.
Last year, Chartbeat defeated High Times in the semifinals, 12-4.
BuzzFeed cruised to a 9-2 victory over Wall Street Journal in the other semifinal match, avenging their 5-2 loss to the Journal in the 2023 Playoffs.
The threat of rain hovered as Chartbeat and BuzzFeed squared off in the championship game. Prior to Chartbeat's run, BuzzFeed took the title in 2019 and 2021. The teams split their two games in the regular season. BuzzFeed scored a run to start the game and three more in the third. But Chartbeat put up six runs over the first three innings to take a 6-4 lead. Then they added four more in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with the score 10-5 in Chartbeat's favor, the sky suddenly opened and rain poured down for the next 10 minutes. The teams kept playing and finished the game in a downpour.
In the consolation game, Forbes defeated the Journal, 16-6.
